Lybech in the tenth – beginning of the eleventh century

Abstract

Dating a settlement is an arduous task, especially without narrow chronological markers. Lyubech, a Rus settlement on the “from the Varangians to the Greeks” route, contains early strata damaged by later activities. Finds from the site can only provide wide date ranges that spurred differing interpretations by the archaeologists of the past. This work aims to introduce the array of archaeological material from the site, explain the landscape features of the area and how archaeology fits into the landscape, and review existing dates for the settlement.
